I am searching for the name of a company that is
rumored to sell 15N-labeled ubiquitin. We would
like to use it as a setup compound for
implementing 1H-15N heteronuclear correlation
experiments. If anyone knows the name of the
company or has any suggestions/hints for alternate
setup compounds for this type of experiment,
we would appreciate the information.

Thanks

hi! I hope this is the right NG to ask in. I am looking for some MRI
segmentation techniques implemented in C or Fortran to convert them
for a visualization environment.

please e-mail anything you know about to : maurizio@nibh.go.jp

Dear str-nmr netters,

Thanks to all who replied to my questions about
a good set up compound for heternuclear protein
experiments. The two products that seem to be of most
use are described below. From talking to several people
that have used them, the consensus seems to be that both
are extremely useful and have their own virtues. The small
peptide appears to be useful for first learning how to
actually do the fancy experiments, because there's no
H2O, the sample is simple, and you can do some of the
3d experiments in an afternoon. The labeled ubiquitin
is said to be very useful in that it allows you to
gain experience doing the experiments on large molecules
using a known system. In short, which one you buy depends
upon your experience and the problem you are working on.
Those that can afford it recommend both.

Email me in a month or so if you
want more details.

Cheers,
Darryl

The company that supplies labeled ubiquitin is VLI Research, The Meadows,
Suite 116, 485 Devon Park Drive, Wayne, PA 19087, Phone (215) 687-4500,
FAX (215) 688-6524.

They have both 15N and 15N-13C labeled Ubiquitin. The price for 15N was
$2000/10mg and 15N-13C was $7500/mg in 1992 the last time we purchased samples.
The quality was quite good, we did not see any impurities by NMR.

As far as I know they only have labeled Ubiquitins. I do not know if they are
still in business or what the current price is. Our last contact was in the
summer of 1992.

Cambridge was also supplying a 15N-13C labeled tri-peptide of Gly-Phe-Leu as a
1mM DMSO NMR sample. The cost was about $950. We did not like this sample.
We felt that 1mM was too dilute for a setup sample.

I hope this helps.

Greetings!

We are considering the purchase of the SGI Power Challenge
system as a number cruncher server for a couple of groups in
our institution. I was wondering if anyone has some experience
and/or real benchmarks for this cpu versus say the IBM RS600/590s
or Dec Alpha cpus?

Our involvement will be for structure calculations with XPLOR or
possibly some of the commercial stuff like Biosym's DGII plus
one of the other groups involved does ab initio calculations
with GAUSSIAN. Does anyone have info on these on a Power
Challenge...I know it won't be like a Cray, but can you help
make a stab at relative performance in the real world?

Thanks!

I don't think there is such a company. I've checked every source
I know of. If you find the company, please post for everybody
else's benefit as I'm sure a company having this product would
also have a number of other interesting, rarely available
compounds for our general enjoyment.

I would like some oppinions on vendors of synthetic RNA oligonucleotides.
Specifically, the RNA needs to be NMR-pure for 1H NMR.
In the past we have ordered RNA which contained the deprotection chemicals.
This was unsatisfactory. Any sugestions for oligonucleotides less than 20
bases will be apreciated.

A postdoctoral position is available immediately at the University of
Edinburgh. We are looking for somebody with experience in the
application of mulidimensional heteronuclear NMR techniques to
any system but preferably biological macromolecules. This post is
funded by the BBSRC for 3 years and is to elucidate the structures
of cell-surface receptors for 2 major human viruses. We currently
have 20% access on a 600MHz spectrometer that is about to be upgraded
to include a third rf channel and pulsed field gradients. We
expect to be funded soon for the purchase of a second instrument that
will be devoted entirely to the work of our group and our collaborators.
Computing equipment and protein production facilities are excellent.
Oh yes, and Edinburgh is a great city to live in. Please let
me know if you are interested (barlow@bioch.ox.ac.uk)

We are also looking for a molecular biology Post Doc.

Paul Barlow.

Can someone explain to me what a soret line in an UV spectrum is.

I'm asked to outline a mechanism for the preparation of Tetraphenylporprhin from propionic acid, benzaldehyde and pyrrole. I don't have a clue. What reacts first? How does pyrrole cyclize?

Thanks for any help.

Actually the latest timings I have seen show the SG Power
Challenges competing very well with a Cray.
Timings with Amber molecular dynamics (basically the
same algorithm used in Axel Brunger's Xplor) show an SG PC with
2 processors matching C90 speeds.
Based on CHARMM timings of Milan Hodoscek, I recently estimated that
one could obtain the MD compute power of a 256 processor Cray T3D
supercomputer with 2 SG PCs expanded with racks of 16 processors each.

So, in my opinion, it currently looks reasonably feasible for a very
well-funded lab or dept. to have in-house workstation-based supercomputing
for NMR and molecular simulation applications.

To browse Milan's full sheet of CHARMM timings (including Dec alpha)
the interested browser could catch a wave to: http://www.ki.si/parallel.html

who is giving a personal estimate and opinion.

Dear NMR-netters,

I have a protein with a some slow exchanging
protons that I think may be glutamine NH2 protons.
The exchange rates are one day or more in D2O solvent,
phosphate buffer pH 6.0. Is it unusual to see glutamine
NH2 with exchange rates this slow? The MW is 16 kDaltons.
I don't think they are amide protons.

If anyone else has seen these slow exchange rates,
what type of structure was the glutamine in?

Thanks.

Sorry, someone pointed out that I forgot to mention the hardware platform the
modeling software will run on. This will be some kind of SGI workstation,
eg. Indigo 2 Extreme with R4400 processor.

PostDoctoral positions for latinoamerican students in Spain
At the end of this year it will be possible to apply for
PostDoctoral fellowships from the Ministry of Education and
Science of Spain. These fellowships are intended for
latinoamerican students who want to make a postdoctoral stay in
a spanish laboratory. Our group (Biomembranes Group, Department
of Biochemistry of the University of Murcia) works in the field
of Biomembranes, studying the structure, localization and
interactions of lipids and membrane proteins. We use different
techniques such as NMR, DSC, FT-IR, fluorescence, capillary

Four important items follow: How to cancel e-mail subscriptions to
BIOSCI newsgroups, BIOSCI archive searching, the BIOSCI FAQ, and the
BIOSCI User Address Directory form. If you have not yet listed
yourself in our BIOSCI user directory, please take a few minutes to
complete and return the form below. If your personal information has
changed since you listed yourself, please send us a complete new
updated form. We can not make manual revisions to existing entries.

				Sincerely,

				Dave Kristofferson
				BIOSCI/bionet Manager

				biosci-help@net.bio.net

	 **** How to cancel a BIOSCI e-mail subscription ****

If you want to cancel your e-mail subscription to this group,
PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR UNSUBSCRIBE REQUEST TO THE NEWSGROUP ADDRESS
(NOR REPLY TO A MESSAGE POSTED TO THE NEWSGROUP)!!!

This would send your request to all of the readers of the newsgroup,
but it might still not be seen by the BIOSCI staff - thus you would
annoy many people and possibly not accomplish your goal anyway.

IF YOU ARE LOCATED IN THE AMERICAS OR PACIFIC RIM COUNTRIES, please
send a message to

biosci@net.bio.net

Instructions on how to subscribe/unsubscribe will be returned
automatically, so the contents of your message do not matter.

IF YOU ARE LOCATED IN EUROPE, AFRICA OR CENTRAL ASIA, please send a
message to

MXT@dl.ac.uk

containing the word

help

in the body of the message to retrieve e-mail server instructions.
Any text placed on the Subject: line of your message will be ignored,
so be sure to put the "help" command in the body of the message.

If you need personal assistance, a BIOSCI staff member can be
contacted at either of the following addresses. Please contact the
address designated for your location.

Support Address Location
--------------- --------

biosci-help@net.bio.net Americas and the Pacific Rim

		 **** SEARCHING BIOSCI ARCHIVES ****

The easiest way to search the BIOSCI archives is to use gopher
software and connect over the Internet to net.bio.net, the U.S. BIOSCI
computer. We maintain three indexes which are searchable from the
main gopher menu on net.bio.net: (1) an index of all BIOSCI postings;
(2) an index of individual journal article references from the Table
of Contents postings on the BIO-JOURNALS newsgroup; and (3) an index
of BIOSCI users including regular mail and e-mail addresses, phone/FAX
numbers, research interests, and newsgroup participation.

E-mail users can search the BIOSCI archives by using our waismail
e-mail server. For instructions send the message

help

to waismail@net.bio.net. Leave the Subject: line blank (anything
entered on the Subject: line is ignored).

WAIS software can also be used to search the archives as described in
the BIOSCI FAQ (see below).

Finally, the BIOSCI archive files are accessible by anonymous FTP to
net.bio.net [134.172.2.69] in the directory pub/BIOSCI.

**** BIOSCI FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) SHEET ****

New users of BIOSCI/bionet may want to read the "Frequently Asked
Questions" or "FAQ" sheet for BIOSCI. The FAQ provides details on how
to participate in these forums and is available for anonymous FTP from
net.bio.net [134.172.2.69] in pub/BIOSCI/doc/biosci.FAQ or for
retrieval by gopher to net.bio.net, port 70. It may also be requested
by sending the command

info faq

in the body of an e-mail message to the Internet address
biosci-server@net.bio.net. Please do not enter the info faq command
on the Subject: line of your message since the e-mail server ignores
text on the Subject: line.

The FAQ is also posted on the first of each month to the newsgroup
BIONEWS/bionet.announce immediately following the posting of the
BIOSCI information sheet.

**** BIOSCI USER ADDRESS DIRECTORY ****

Please take this opportunity to add your name and address information
to the BIOSCI User Address Database if you have not already done so.

Below is the address form that we would like each reader of the
BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups to complete and return if you would like to
be listed in our database. The database serves as a directory that
enables biologists, who are currently using (or even just reading) the
BIOSCI newsgroups, to look up e-mail addresses and other information
about our users.

The address database is reindexed nightly for WAIS, waismail, and
gopher access. If you have access to gopher, connect to net.bio.net
to search the database. If you have access to WAIS, please use our
WAIS source biologists-addresses.src. If you are not on the Internet,
please use our waismail server (send the word "help" to
waismail@net.bio.net to get instructions; any text on the Subject:
line of your message will be ignored, so put the help command in the
body of the mail message.).

Please carefully follow the instructions for completing the form
below and return it to either of the following two addresses
(whichever is more convenient for you). Thanks in advance for taking
the time to complete and return the form.

Addresses for returning forms Location Network

MAKING SURE THAT YOUR INFORMATION IS CURRENT

This notice will be mailed bimonthly to each newsgroup. You should
check your database entry from time-to-time to see if your address
information is still up-to-date.

Using Gopher to complete the form
                  ---------------------------------

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Please enter all responses after the : on each line, leaving one (1)
blank space after the : (i.e., before the start of your text).

Please do NOT extend your responses past the end of each line (80
characters).

PLEASE DO NOT alter any of the field identifiers such as "first name: ".
If you have nothing to enter after a field identifier, PLEASE LEAVE IT
- do not delete it even if there is no data on the line in question.

Several lines are provided at the end of the form for comments, but,
please adhere to the line length restriction.

On the date: line, please enter the date in the DD-MM-YY format, e.g.,
15-05-93 for 15 May 1993. This line will tell others when the
information was last updated. Please be sure to include the 0's for
single digit days or months, e.g., 15-05-93, not 15-5-93.

Note that the "e-mail network: " line below is for specifying, e.g.,
"Internet," "BITNET," "EARN," "JANET," or whatever other network that
your computer may be on.

If you are uncertain about any field, please feel free to leave it
blank, but please DO NOT DELETE the field identifier from the form!

In the first field below, "New information or Update ...", please
enter "N" if this is the first time that you have registered in the
directory or "U" if you are correcting a listing that you sent to us
previously.

The comment: lines may be used for anything that you like but PLEASE
DO NOT DELETE THEM FROM THE FORM OR ALTER THEM. One suggested use is
to list the names of the newsgroups in which you participate. Please
use the MAILING LIST name (see below - the latest version of the list
can be requested from biosci@net.bio.net) instead of the USENET name
even if you don't participate by e-mail. WAIS might get confused by
the periods in the USENET names. This allows one to retrieve via WAIS

INTRODUCTION
^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Organising Committee invites all crystallographers to attend Crystal
XIX, the Nineteenth Meeting of the Society of Crystallographers in
Australia. The conference will be held at the University of Ballarat in
country Victoria, from the evening of Tuesday the 18th of April ('Easter
Tuesday') to lunchtime on Friday the 21st of April, 1995.

Immediately following Crystal XIX at the University will be a two day
inorganic solid state chemistry conference, the "Bevan Fest", to mark the
formal retirement of Professor "Judge" Bevan from Flinders University.
More details are given on the last page.

THE VENUE
^^^^^^^^^
Ballarat University is set on 110 hectares in a natural bushland setting
about 10 km south east of the city of Ballarat. Very pleasant on-campus
accommodation is provided by the Mount Helen Residence, capable of
accommodating 514 people in single bed/study rooms. Games room, kitchen
areas, laundries and outdoor barbecue facilities are available in the
residential complex. Excellent recreational facilities are available
including fully equipped gymnasia, jogging and walking tracks and an
Arboretum. All meals are provided by the University's catering service and
fully licensed Bar facilities serve the various function rooms. Numerous
motels and other forms of accommodation are available within a few
kilometres of the campus are some are given on page 6.

The University has a full range of lecture and seminar facilities. It also
has full AARNet access, Internet and E-mail access which can be easily
arranged on request for all participants.

Ballarat's weather can be quite variable in April. Please allow for both
mild to hot days and cold nights.

TRANSPORT
^^^^^^^^^
Ballarat University is one and a half hours drive from the centre of
Melbourne. A map showing how to get there will be included in the final
circular (Feb. 95). There are up to six shuttle bus services per day from
Tullamarine airport to Ballarat. Cost, about $20 each way. Numbers
permitting (minimum of 4 passengers per trip), these buses will detour to
the University campus. The committee will help coordinate private car
transport from Melbourne. Train and private bus services also run from the
centre of Melbourne to Ballarat. Please indicate your form of transport
on the conference registration form. Rental cars from Melbourne's
Tullamarine Airport cost upwards from around $55 per day which includes
insurance and unlimited mileage.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Conference Lecture will be presented by the 1987 Fellow, Professor
Michael Hart, Emeritus Professor of Physics, University of Manchester. He
will speak on new developments, applications and future directions for
synchrotron studies in Materials Science.

It is anticipated that the majority of talks will be drawn from the
submitted abstracts. We particularly welcome both oral and poster
presentations from students. In addition to the usual topic areas
(protein crystallography, inorganic and mineral structures, etc) we
encourage contributions in areas such as :-

	Applications of synchrotron radiation
Structure studies using less traditional methods such as XANES,
        EXAFS, MASNMR, DAFS, etc.
	Structure determinations using electron microscopy/diffraction
        (TEM/SAED), and neutron diffraction.
	Crystallographic teaching
	New developments in crystallographic hardware/software

Posters will be displayed throughout the conference. There will be a
poster session on the Wednesday evening, accompanied by refreshments.

SOCIAL PROGRAM
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
A mixer will be held on the Tuesday evening. This will be supplemented by
a wine tasting presented by a local wine maker (Dominique Portet, Taltarni
Vineyard). Non drinkers will be catered for! :-)

Various activities are planned for the Thursday afternoon, depending on
interest shown. These include a visit to Sovereign Hill (an 1850's gold
rush theme park), a tour of Pyrenees Wineries and a tour of Ballarat and
its surrounds. Please indicate on the registration form if you are
interested in participating in one of these activities.

The Poster Session will be held on the Wednesday evening, with
refreshments provided.

The Conference Dinner is on the Thursday evening, with an after-dinner
talk by Professor Alec Moodie. Professor Moodie has graciously agreed to
give a talk encompassing some history/ personal reminiscences associated
with Professor Sandy Mathieson's distinguished career at CSIRO (Chemical
Physics). Such a talk is particularly timely given the approach of
Professor Mathieson's 75th birthday and the centenary of the discovery of
X-rays.

REGISTRATION

The "complete" registration form is available by contacting the conference
office. A Postscript versions of the complete 2nd circular can also be
obtained by anonymous ftp to :-

sol.dmp.csiro.au:/pub/xtallography/xtal-19/2nd-a4.ps (A4 Paper Size)
sol.dmp.csiro.au:/pub/xtallogrpahy/xtal-19/2nd-let.ps (Letter Paper Size)

We will accept late registrations from Honours and postgraduate students
who commence their studies after 1st February and attempt to organise
accommodation for them. Note that in addition to single-room on-campus
accommodation, there are a number of budget priced motels/hotels close to
the University, see examples on page 6. Please indicate your preference
on the registration form.

ABSTRACTS
^^^^^^^^^
An abstract submission form is given with the complete second circular
(available from the conference office) fsmust be submitted with each
abstract. The deadline for abstract submission is the 1st February, 1995.
You are asked to indicate on the form whether you have a preference for an
oral submission but please remember that there are a limited number of
lecture slots available.

Abstracts must not be more than one A4 page in length and should adhere to
the style in the complete second circular. Please use an 11pt Times Roman
font if available, an A4 page size and margins of 3cm all around. The
presenting author is underlined. The completed book of abstracts will
allot one A4 page per abstract. We are planning to process and print the
abstracts ourselves. Therefore, in addition to the hardcopy of your
abstract we require an electronic submission. This can be on an IBM
formatted computer disk or E-mail. We are able to deal with many word-
processor formats but prefer Word for Windows 2.0, Word for DOS, Word5
(Macintosh) or Wordperfect. If you wish to submit by E-mail, convert the
binary document file into an ASCII equivalent using either the MIME or
UUENCODE protocols. If you are unsure of how to do this, ask your local
system manager or computer guru. Most decent E-mail programs can support
one of the above. E-mail submissions and queries should be sent to
XTAL-19@dmp.csiro.au.

POSTERS
^^^^^^^
Posters will be displayed throughout the conference and there will be one
organised poster session on the Wednesday evening. The space available
for each poster will be 1.2m wide and 1.4m high, on light blue cloth
screens. Attachments will be via Velcro fasteners and will be available
at the meeting.

We are trying to run felix-X version on Mac. Felix itself is
installed in INDIGO-2 workstation. We should be very pleased
if someone can tell us what kind of X-window program (and price)
for this kind of job. Is there any Mac X-window shareware?
Thanks in advance.

Dear netters

here is our experience.
We are using PCs (486 & 386) and only my lucky boss has a Mac.
We run remotely Felix-X (from a Personal Iris 4D/35) and VnmrX (from a
SUN Sparc2).
The X-servers we use are:
1)PC-Xview v.4.1 for DOS, from Network Computing Device (ca.1k$)
2)HCL-eXceed v.3.3.1 for Windows, from Hummingbird Communications (ca.1k$)
They are both working properly but PC-Xview is faster and can use a virtual
screen; with HCL-eXceed you need at least a 486/50Mhz to avoid sleeping
while displaying matrices.
For both you need also a graphic board with 1MByte memory to get the same
colours you have on Unix machines.
If there is any Varian spectrometer in your dept check the System Operation
Manual and/or the 93-94 issues of Magnetic Moments, for more details.
Mac-X: we are able to remotely login on all the Unix Network but we are not
able to get any graphic: we are still investigating on it.

I hope this will help you, but if you need more comments contact me.

A cheaper ($30) solution may be installing Linux on your 386/486
PCs. We have several such PCs connected through Ethernet to our
worksations (IBM/ SliconGraphics). X-Window running on these PCs
are flawless. The only problem with Linux is that it is difficult
for beginners to install (i.e. need to read the manual carefully),
but for $30 this is worth it.
