Job description: We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic Java 
programmer who will work together with 2 professional developers in the 
functionality and extension of the EMBL-EBI’s search engine and liaise 
with an ever growing body of content providers.

The EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological 
data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, 
analysis and representation. The EB-eye (EMBL-EBI's search engine) is a 
project that aims to provide fast and reliable access to all the data 
resources hosted at the institute. These include, ENSEMBL, EMBL-Archive, 
UniProtKB, PDBe, Medline/PubMed, ChEBI, ArrayExpress.



Qualifications and experience: The successful applicant will hold a 
degree in Computer Science and have at least 2 years experience of Java 
development. Experience of programming in Java using Apache Lucene, 
Antlr, Spring and Maven will be an advantage. It is desirable for 
applicants to have experience in bioinformatics, in particular knowledge 
of bioinformatics databases.

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of object oriented 
analysis, design concepts and tests. The post holder must be comfortable 
working in a UNIX/Linux environment. (S)he must have good communication 
skills and show the ability to work independently as well as within a 
team. The successful applicant will possess excellent interpersonal 
skills and enjoy working in a stimulating international culture.



Contract: An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the 
successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at 
the time of review.
