It was written at and gotten from the San Diego Supercomputer Center, which has a number of very useful utilities for image manipulation and type conversion (ftp to sdsc.edu - careful, its a VMS machine, login as anonymous, password , cd to [anonymous.sdscpub..graphics]. There are utilities for most *nix workstations, as well as a few for the Mac. Imagetyper stamps the resource fork of image (or other) files with the ID of whatever application you want. A recent example: Someone wanted graphic output from a GCG program to maipulate in a Canvas document. GCG (VAX) can output HPGL files which Corel Draw (PC) can read and convert to PICT (Mac) or DXF vector files. The PICT files are valid image files but because of their passage thru DOS, are not readable by Canvas. With Imagetyper, you can look up Canvas' ID type and stamp the PICT file with it so that it is recognized as a true Canvas document. Obviously the application has to be able to read the image type in the first place; no amount of camoflage will convince Canvas to read a native Alias file, but it certainly makes sensible conversions easier.
