PC Gopher v1.20 PC Gopher is an internet Gopher Protocol client designed to run on IBM and compatible microcomputers. In order for PC Gopher to talk to your ethernet card, you must run a copy of the appropriate packet. A small sample of the available packet drivers (from Clarkson College) is included in this directory; if you can't find one that works with your ethernet card the complete collection is available via anonymous ftp from sun.soe.clarkson.edu, in the directory /pub/ka9q. Version Notes As of version 1.1, you no longer need the separate TCP/IP driver called IBMTCP.DVR. If you had an older version of PC Gopher, you may have a copy of this file; just delete it, since it's no longer necessary. As of this version, the format of the configuration file CONFIG.IGP has changed. Delete any old copies of this file BEFORE running PC Gopher for the first time. Configuration To run the Gopher program, you must provide some site-specific configuration information. To enter this information, choose "Configure" from the Options menu; after you have filled in all of the fields (described below), the Gopher will write all of the information to disk in a textfile called CONFIG.IGP. The required config info is: 1. Name of a gopher server. You are welcome to use our server, which goes by the name of gopher.micro.umn.edu 2. Port number that the gopher server listens on. For our gopher server, this is currently port 150. If you don't have a BOOTP server, you must also enter: 3. The IP address of your nameserver. You must enter this information in order for the Gopher to resolve names into IP addresses. 4. The IP address of your default gateway. This is sometimes referred to as the "default route" or "default router". 5. The IP address of your microcomputer. 6. The netmask in use on your campus. If you are on a slow or busy network, you may need to adjust the following timeouts upwards; if not, you can just use the defaults: 7. The number of seconds to wait for input before timing out. 8. The number of seconds to wait for a connection to be completely set up. 9. The number of seconds to wait for name lookups to be completed. Once you have entered all of the information, click on the "OK" button (or use the tab key to tab until the "OK" button is higlighted, and hit the return key). The program will write its config file to the current directory, and you're ready to go! Running The Program To start the program, choose "New Gopher" from the File menu. As soon as the Gopher window opens, the program will attempt to connect to the server you've specified in the config dialog box; it will request a listing of the root level of the server. The listing that you get back will look like this: About Gopher Administrative Information Academic Research Tools Search everything The first character of each line indicates whether the line refers to a file, a subdirectory, or an index server. You can double-click with the mouse on any file or subdirectory to see its contents (or use the arrow keys to choose an entry and hit the return key); if you choose an index server, a dialog box will pop up, allowing you to enter a search string. To start the search, click on the "OK" button (or hit the return key). At any time, you can navigate back up a heirarchy of subdirectories by clicking on the "Go Back" button (or tabbing until the button is highlighted, and then hitting the return key). Bug Reports, Suggestions, Etc. Your suggestions for the PC Gopher client are welcomed, as are bug reports.
