Source location: ftp://iubio.bio.indiana.edu/util/gopher/gopher2-bio.tar.gz Example server at: http://iubio.bio.indiana.edu/ gopher://iubio.bio.indiana.edu:71/ This is a variant of U.Minnesota's gopherd server, version 2.014. It includes changes applied by Don Gilbert, gilbertd@bio.indiana.edu. These include basic HTTP/HTML server support, so this server can be run as a dual gopher+/http server; it includes support for freewais-sf variant of wais search software; it includes various gopher+ patches and other changes used at IUBio archive (gopher/http to iubio.bio.indiana.edu) This server provides one view of the same file system to gopher+ and http clients. It includes a few special features for modifying that: the filename.abstract block adds descriptions to html directories, the filename.nohtml block hides an item like gopher+ ask dialog from html clients the filename.onlyhtml block hides an item like html forms from gopher clients The "linkdir" addition adds a symbolic linked folder to the current server folder (e.g., to link in an ftp file system w/o putting gopher/http forms in the ftp area): Add this kind of item to gopherd.conf: # # any sub-folder with this name will be automagically listed in current folder # use w/ symbolic linked ftp-area folders into gopher-area folders # to avoid putting gopher-junk in ftp area (dgg addition) # linkdir: link.dir Then add symbolic links with name "link.dir" to server folders. There is an "exec+" server type (gopher type) that I use extensively with any kind of form, because it expands the "exec:" type to include gopher+ view parsing and a few other additions. Consider it like HTTP's CGI subprograms. Link format is 0Titleexec+:some commandline params here:/path/to/handlerhostport or 1Titleexec+:.... The exec+ responds to gopher+ "!" and "$" and also can return type 1 (folder) Note: this is not an official distribution, and I don't have much time to spare providing support for it at present. I've used it on SunOS 4.1.2 and DEC Alpha OSF/1 systems. This is the call that I use to run the http variant of this server from SunOS inetd (-H forces http/html services, it supports basic GET and POST variants of http, including http forms): /usr/local/etc/gopherd -HIcu gopher -o /usr/local/etc/gopherd2.conf \ -l /usr/tmp/http.log /bio/gopher/public2 80 -- Don Gilbert, March 1995
