MAPMAKER/EXP Version 3.0 and MAPMAKER/QTL Version 1.1 FTP Instructions MAPMAKER/EXP 3.0 and MAPMAKER/QTL 1.1 are available by anonymous FTP from host "genome.wi.mit.edu". Conect to this host using your FTP program and log in as "anonymous", providing your username (or full email address) as a password. Go to directory: distribution/mapmaker3 where you will find the following TEXT files: FTP.ME FTP Instructions (this document) READ.ME Release Notes INSTALL.ME Installation Instructions If you don't know much about MAPMAKER, or you need to know more about what kind of computer you need, fetch the READ.ME file. READ.ME also contains the MAPMAKER license agreement, which you must agree to before retrieving any software. If you decide to go ahead and fetch MAPMAKER, fetch the INSTALL.ME file also. Be sure that your FTP program is set to fetch these files in TEXT mode. After that, fetch one or more of the following archives, which contain: - executables for the appropriate machine - on-line help files - sample data sets - portions of the Free Software Foundation's Ghostscript package (PC and Sun) The following ready-to-run distributions are available: mapm3pc1.exe, mapm3pc2.exe - for 386/486 PCs with DOS (self-extracting PK-ZIP archives, you need both) mapm3-sparc.tar.Z - for Sun SPARCStations with SunOS (compressed tar archive) mapm3-aux.hqx - for Macs with A/UX (BinHexed self-extracting Compact-Pro archive) In addition, you can fetch: mapm3-source.tar.Z - complete source code in C (compressed tar archive, for Unix) includes the Free Software Foundation's "GNU readline" package ghostscript.tar.Z - full Ghostscript distribution, ver 2.5.2 (compressed tar archive, for Unix) includes all documentation, some extra fonts, SPARC executables maclpr.hqx - a small Macintosh program which makes it easier to print PostScript files mapm3src.exe - complete source code in C (self-extracting PK-ZIP archive, for DOS) mapm3doc.hqx - Complete documentation, for Microsoft Word 5.0 on Macintosh (BinHex'ed self-extracting compact-pro archive) Hints: You MUST fetch the ".exe" and ".Z" files in BINARY (not TEXT) mode, or they will become corrupted. You must fetch the ".hqx" files in TEXT mode. Follow the instructions in INSTALL.ME to unpack the archive and configure the software for your system. For A/UX users: We recommend that you use a "real" Mac program (such as Fetch or HyperFTP) to retireve the ".hqx" files, although you can do it with A/UX's command line "ftp" program (most Mac FTP programs know how to decode BinHex files automatically, otherwise you will need BinHex 4.0.) However, to fetch a ".tar.Z" file, use the command line "ftp" program. Talk to your network support people for help. You do NOT need the source code or a C compiler to install the program on SPARCStation, A/UX, or MS-DOS computers. You are welcome (and encouraged) to fetch the source code and port it to other platforms, if you have the expertise to do so. If your port is robust, we will also make it available by FTP. Ports, bug fixes, enhancements, etc may be dropped off in the "/incoming" FTP directory (please label then appropritely and send us email about it!). If you fetch the program and make any use of it, please register as a user by sending us the form below. We need to know how many people use the package in order to get money to distribute it! Periodically, look on this FTP server for an UPDATE.ME file (or some such thing), which will tell you of any major bugfixes, enhancements, etc. _______________________________________________________________________________ MAPMAKER 3.0 and MAPMAKER/QTL 1.1 Registration and Documentation Request: Please register me as a MAPMAKER user: (form for Email) Name: Title: Organization: Address: Phone: Electronic Mail: (if you read it often enough) Select either: ____ Please send me one printed copy of the MAPMAKER documentation package. ____ Save a tree and don't send me one.
