4.1. Identifying open reading frames

FRAMES shows open reading frames for the six possible translation frames of a DNA or RNA sequence. Make sure you have first set up the graphics 'driver' for your terminal.

$ Frames

Plot FRAMES for what sequence ? platelet.seq

Begin (* 1 *) ?
End (* 1308 *) ?

The text font can be changed on the command line using /font, and the size increased by 10% using /Scale:

$ Frames/font=8/Scale=1.1

A start codon is indicated by a vertical bar. Termination is shown by a vertical bar extending below the horizontal line.

The last three reading frames are labelled 5' to 3' in the opposite direction to the top three reading frames. The first reading frame shows an open reading frame from approx 380 to 1020. The other frames show shorter stretches.

This is not conclusive proof that 380-1020 is the coding region. An error in the sequence may have caused an early termination for the short run shown in frame 3, starting at c.250.
