16.1. Submitting a sequence to the databases

Your hard-earned sequence is now on computer, and you may wish to publish the details. Most journals now make it a condition of publication that a new sequence be entered in the databases. The essential reference to obtain from the database compilers is an accession number.

16.1.1. Copy the submission form

The submission form is a small file (EMBL.SUBMIT) held with the rest of the EMBL database. First copy (or FETCH) the form.

$ Copy Embldir:Embl.submit

16.1.2. Enter the details

Using an editor, fill in the relevant details in the file EMBL.SUBMIT. Don't forget to append the sequence to the file.

The complete, official, guidelines on completing the form can be found with the EMBL database, in the file DATASUB.DOC. Copy this file, print it, or just list it on your terminal:

$ Type Embldir:Datasub.doc

16.1.3. Mail the sequence

When the EMBL.SUBMIT file is complete, mail it to the following address (don't do this unless you really are submitting a sequence):

datasubs@embl-heidelberg.de@earn-relay.ac.uk

You may require authority from your site manager to mail to UK.AC.EARN-RELAY.

16.1.4. Acknowledgement

You would normally expect to receive an acknowledgement within seven working days, and be issued with an accession number which can be quoted in any publication. You may even receive an acknowledgement from the Databank of Japan (DDBJ), which cooperates with EMBL and Genbank.

16.1.5. Authorin

The AUTHORIN program, available for the PC or Mac, is now preferred by both EMBL and Genbank. Authorin is available by FTP (see next section) from ncbi.nlm.nih.gov in the directories pub/authorin/mac and pub/authorin/dos. Alternatively send a mail to authorin@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov requesting the disks and documentation:
