Though developed and originally distributed academically with source code for public bioinformatics data search and retrieval, the Sequence Retrieval System is and always has been copyrighted work of its authors, primarily Thure Etzold. This software is now developed commercially, and it has benefited greatly in growth and expansion from commercialization and the support provided through that venue. The company Lion Bioscience continues (as of 2002) to provide use of SRS free for academic and non-commercial services, at http://www.lionbioscience.com/ (see also http://srs.ebi.ac.uk/) It is with some regret that I remove the publicly distributed source to SRS from this archive of bioinformatics works, as it has played a prominent role in the growth of public bioinformatics databanks and their distribution and use by bioscientists. -- Don Gilbert, September 2002
